OHIP Billing Number Registration


Provider Registration

Provider registration is required in order to receive an Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) billing number to submit claims for insured services.

In order for health care professionals (who are applying for an Ontario Health Insurance Plan billing number) to be able to submit claims to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (the ministry) for insured services they must:

  1. Hold a valid Certificate of Registration with a governing body
  2. Have an Ontario practice address
  3. Complete and sign the Application for OHIP Billing Number for Health Professionals form
  4. Provide banking information to support direct payment
  5. Register for Medical Claims Electronic Data Transfer (MCEDT) and Health Card Validation (HCV) services

In order to complete a registration, please submit:

  1. A Completed Application
  2. A copy of the valid Certificate of Registration
  3. Banking Information

Group Registration

Group registration is required to assign a group of physicians, a group number. A group number is not a billing number, it is a number issued by the ministry that allows individual physicians to have their billings associated with a group.

Health care groups who are applying for an OHIP group number must complete and submit an ‘OHIP Group Registration for Health Care Professionals‘ form by one of the following methods:

Registered Third Party Billing Agency (RTPBA) Registration

In order for Registered Third Party Billing Agencies (RTPBAs) to submit claims for insured services, they are required to apply for an Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) Group number by:

  1. Contacting Claims Services Branch, Ottawa, to request enrollment in the Out-of-Country Travellers Program as Registered Third Party Billing Agents
  2. Provide proof of an Ontario business address
  3. Provide a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Letter of Credit from their banking institution
  4. Provide banking information to support direct payment
  5. Register for Medical Claims Electronic Data Transfer (MCEDT) and Health Card Validation (HCV) services
