Amendments to the Schedule of Benefits to reflect evidence-informed care

What is changing?
Effective April 1, 2012, only the existence of a suspected or known pathology can trigger ordering diagnostic tests for the lower back

The findings of numerous research studies, clinical practice guidelines and expert panel recommendations show that X-rays, CT scans and MRIs are not useful tools in treating chronic low back pain, unless there are specific signs of a serious underlying cause. These causes include but are not limited to:

Reducing the number of unnecessary diagnostic tests will greatly improve access for patients most in need of these services.
