Statement from Minister Hoskins Regarding Input Into Primary Care Reform

October 15, 2015

Today, Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, issued the following statement:

"Our government knows that a strong primary care system is the bedrock for any high-performing health system. And to put patients first, we must ensure that primary-care providers and services are organized around the patient and the needs of our population. I know that health care professionals across Ontario share that goal. It includes ensuring access to a primary-care provider for every Ontarian that wants one and better integrating all the parts in our health care system so that it can be more responsive and effective, when and where we need it most.

That is why we engaged a panel of experts, led by Elizabeth Baker and Dr. David Price, to provide advice on how to improve the delivery of primary care for Ontarians and better integrate primary-care providers with each other and within the health-care system. They also looked at how we can continue improving access to primary care and to interdisciplinary care teams. We thank the panel for their work and their report.

The report is one piece of advice the government is considering when discussing how to strengthen primary care in Ontario. Along with the recommendations of other reports submitted to the government over the past few years, it will help inform our work as we go forward.

Our focus continues to be on ensuring Ontarians are connected to a primary care provider and can see their primary care provider in a timely way when they are sick, while ensuring that patients can continue to choose their own provider. We will empower patients, not create additional administration. Those are our guiding principles as we move to improve how primary care is provided in Ontario. And as always, we will continue to consult with patients, providers and our stakeholders."
