Public Health Laboratories

There are 11 Public Health Ontario Laboratories in Ontario.  Public Health Ontario operates these laboratories.

The laboratories provide clinical laboratory services and expertise in diseases prevention and health protection and promotion.

The laboratories' services include:

  • Clinical and environmental testing (including well water testing for private residences)
  • Clinical consultation
  • Technical and customer service support
  • Education and training programs for laboratory professionals
  • Evaluation of new laboratory technologies and methodologies

To prepare for and respond to emergencies, the Public Health Ontario Laboratories team:​

  • Provides laboratory surveillance
  • Tests for bioterrorism
  • Investigates outbreaks
  • Provides laboratory support and resources for the management of environmental or public health emergencies
