WOMEN : Ontario Breast Screening Program

This comprehensive breast cancer screening program is for women aged 50 to 74. A visit includes a mammogram, instruction in breast self-examination, and in some locations, a physical breast examination by a specially trained nurse.

In 2007-08, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care committed $38M million to operate the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) throughout Ontario and to screen over 380,000 women for breast cancer.

Women may be referred to the program by their family doctor or they can call and make appointments themselves. Women who are screened by the OBSP get follow-up invitations so they can be re-screened every two years.

The OBSP provides information in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese and Chinese and 17 other languages. The OBSP also has special outreach projects that promote the program to aboriginal groups, multicultural communities and the visually impaired.

There are 140 sites across the province. This includes 131 affiliate sites and eight co-ordinating sites to ensure women have access to this service province-wide. There is also a mobile van service operating out of Thunder Bay to reach northern areas.
