Regulation of Health Professions in Ontario : New Directions –
The Regulation of Personal Support Workers June 2007
Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council
The Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council (HPRAC) report entitled A Report to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care on Regulatory Issues and Matters Respecting Personal Support Workers has been released by the ministry for public review and comment. HPRAC is an arm's-length advisory council that has a mandate under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) to provide independent policy advice to the minister on matters related to the regulation of health professions in Ontario. In February 2005, the Minister requested, among other matters, that HPRAC review the range of work carried out by personal support workers and make initial recommendations on whether all or some part of this range would indicate that personal support workers should be considered for regulation under the RHPA. In its April 2006 report entitled Regulation of Health Professions in Ontario : New Directions, HPRAC indicated that further investigation into the matter of personal support workers was required. HPRAC conducted public consultations, circulated and posted a discussion guide on its website and sought feedback from members of the public and other interested parties. HPRAC submitted its final report respecting personal support workers to the minister in September 2006. The ministry is considering HPRAC's recommendations. Practitioners, stakeholders and the public may comment on the recommendations by forwarding comments to regulatoryprojects.moh@ontario.ca , or Personal Support Workers Report, The full report is available for download in PDF format, below :
