In September 2000, the Federal Government established a $1B Federal Medical Equipment Trust to be shared among the provinces and territories. Ontario's total share of the Fund was $379.7M. The intended purpose of the funds, as outlined in the First Ministers' Communiqué on Health was to :

• Acquire and install necessary diagnostic and treatment equipment;
• Enable doctors, nurses and other health care providers to provide more effective treatments for patients;
• Provide appropriate and reasonably timely access to diagnostic and treatment services; and
• Provide other needed equipment to improve the overall quality of health care and working conditions for nurses and other health care personnel.

Ontario's funds have been distributed over 2 years with $189.5M provided to health care facilities in 2000/01 and a further $190.2M in 2001/02.

Consistent with the intent of the Fund, Ontario developed general criteria to be adhered to by the organizations eligible to share in the funds in both fiscal years. Each recipient signed back agreement to following the criteria as a pre-condition for receiving the funds.
