The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care today notified Kingston General Hospital (KGH) of his intent to recommend that a supervisor be appointed for the hospital.

The minister’s actions were prompted by the findings and recommendations of a report prepared by KGH Investigator, Graham Scott.   Released today, the report indicates a series of long-standing governance, management and financial issues at the hospital that need to be addressed. The report is the result of over three months of review of the hospital.

Under legislation, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care must notify the board of a hospital at least 14 days before recommending to Cabinet that a supervisor be appointed.  On the minister’s recommendation, Cabinet may appoint a supervisor if it considers that it is in the public’s best interest.

“The McGuinty government is committed to ensuring that residents of Kingston are well served by Kingston General Hospital,” said David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.  “The findings of Graham’s Scott’s report clearly indicate there are serious ongoing and outstanding issues at the hospital that must be addressed.  I believe the appointment of a supervisor would be in the public interest.”

“While our findings suggest that much work needs to be done the report is very positive about the future for the Kingston General Hospital,” said Graham Scott, KGH Investigator.  “I am confident that the government will build on the report’s recommendations to ensure that the residents of Kingston and Southeastern Ontario continue to have quality care and enhanced access to services.”

“The report’s recommendations will help us move forward in addressing health care concerns at the Kingston General Hospital,” said Georgina Thompson, Chair of the South East Local Health Integration Network.  “We will work with the government and the hospital to ensure that the Kingston General Hospital is the steady and strong health care leader that this community needs.  The Investigator’s Report provides many recommendations to help the hospital get there.”
