TORONTO - The McGuinty government is investing $3.95 million to expand and renovate the emergency and cancer services departments at Toronto East General Hospital, Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman announced today.
"This investment will result in better access to quality hospital services here at Toronto East General, and it will reduce wait times," Smitherman said. "I'm excited about what the future holds for Toronto East General. But the big winners will be the people who depend on this hospital and on the dedicated and professional staff who work here."
The funding announced today includes :
- $2.15 million to renovate the emergency department to better care for patients and families
- $1.8 million to relocate the hematology and oncology clinic to provide more space for current patients and the expected patient increase over the next several years.
"I'm delighted the government is supporting Toronto East General Hospital's comprehensive plan to improve our facilities so that residents of southeast Toronto will have access to the very best in hospital care," said Rob Devitt, President and CEO. "These renovations will help Toronto East General Hospital meet the existing demand and expected future rise in emergency and cancer patient volumes by facilitating more logical and streamlined patient flow and care throughout the emergency and oncology departments."
Today's initiative is part of the McGuinty government's plan to build a health care system that delivers on three priorities - keeping Ontarians healthy, reducing wait times and providing better access to doctors and nurses.
