2008 Annual Report of the Chief Medical Officer of Health of Ontario to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

Dr. David Williams’ annual report presents a ‘check-up’ on the province’s public health system. It focuses on Ontario’s capacity to prevent and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.

The report examines the strengths and challenges within the system related to three broad areas :

• Surveillance
• Prevention and protection
• Coordination and communication

It highlights progress made in three areas:

• Enhancements to infectious disease surveillance systems and practices
• Improved collaboration across jurisdictional levels
• Continued emergency preparedness planning and response activities

The report suggests that the Listeriosis outbreak of 2008 demonstrated the need for even greater cohesion within the system and highlighted the requirement for ongoing investments to continue to build capacity and further strengthen surveillance tools, capabilities and other resources to better respond to potential complex health threats in the future
