ColonCancerCheck

Privacy Program

ColonCancerCheck is a program that aims to increase Ontarians’ access to colorectal cancer screening and, ultimately, reduce mortality due to colorectal cancer. To meet this goal, ColonCancerCheck collects personal health information about you and uses this information to determine whether you should be screened for colorectal cancer. If you are eligible, ColonCancerCheck will invite you to be screened, remind you about screenings, and, if you do not have a primary care provider, provide you with your test result and with a follow-up referral, where required.

ColonCancerCheck is a major step forward in the quality of cancer prevention and care in Ontario. This program has developed additional tools and resources to assist primary care physicians and other health care professionals to expand Ontarians’ access to screening. In the beginning stages, colorectal cancer has no symptoms. Screening is the best way to detect colorectal cancer, and if caught early, it is 90 per cent curable.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Registry

The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (the "Ministry") appointed Cancer Care Ontario (CCO), a ministerial agency operating under the Cancer Act that steers and coordinates Ontario’s cancer services, to operate ColonCancerCheck. The Ministry also designated CCO under the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA) to compile and maintain the Colorectal Cancer Screening Registry. ColonCancerCheck uses this Registry to improve access to colorectal cancer screening.

PHIPA requires each prescribed registry to make publicly available a description of its functions and its privacy practices. These practices must be approved by the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner/Ontario every three years and must protect the security and confidentiality of the personal health information that the prescribed registry receives.
