Real Change In Action - Emergency Department Process Improvement

Emergency Department Process Improvement Program (ED-PIP) is a structured program to support improvements in ED Length of Stay (LOS) metrics and build capabilities within hospitals for long term sustainable change through LEAN methodologies. The program focuses on creating sustainable process improvements within the hospital to improve patient flow

ED-PIP has five program objectives:

  1. to support hospital staff to move their ED metrics towards provincial Pay for Results targets
  2. to improve patient and public satisfaction with emergency care
  3. to improve the staff working environment
  4. to build capacity in hospital staff to lead improvement work and sustain long-term change
  5. to create provincial and regional networks to share information across hospitals

ED-PIP supports hospitals in three main areas – operational improvements, performance management and culture and capabilities.  The program uses a LEAN improvement approach based on learning from health care transformations in Ontario and globally. Participating hospitals move through the 4 stages of the program at the same time – from diagnostic, to solution design, to pilot and finally roll-out.  At the end of each phase, hospitals meet in large provincial forums to share their results and best practices, which provides important opportunities for peer learning and networking.  Participating hospitals are provided with; on-site support from experts in health care improvement, a comprehensive tool kit and approach, regional forums, training and global experts. The program has engaged 64 sites to date and plans to engage another 29 in Spring 2011.
